Elopement vs Traditional Wedding
The Real Cost
of Getting Married
in New Zealand
A traditional NZ wedding costs anywhere from $20,000 to $90,000+ depending on scale. A Queenstown elopement starts at $4,690 and includes planning, a licensed celebrant, and photography.
The honest comparison
Why most couples spend far more than they planned to
Wedding budgets expand in a particular way. You start with a number that feels manageable. Then the guest list grows. The venue requires its own caterer. The caterer has a minimum spend. The minimum spend is higher than expected. By the time you have added flowers, stationery, favours, and a DJ, you are well past where you started.
A 2025 study by Capsule NZ found that couples spent on average $7,860 more than they initially planned. Around 50% reported significant stress about price creep during planning. The guest list is the single biggest lever: catering, venue capacity, accommodation, and transport all scale directly with how many people attend.
An elopement removes that lever entirely. The cost is fixed. The focus is on the two of you. Most couples who elope with us tell us it was the clearest decision they made in the whole process. Queenstown elopement packages start at NZ$4,690 and include a licensed celebrant, photography, and full ceremony coordination.

Build your traditional wedding cost
Select the elements you would want at a traditional wedding and see what it adds up to. Then compare it to the elopement equivalent. Figures reflect mid-to-upper NZ market rates; actual costs vary by vendor, location, and how much you DIY.
Select vendor category
Celebrant, legal documents, and wedding coordination.
Budget celebrant — NZ$450
Venue hire, catering, and bar tab — the three biggest costs in any traditional wedding.
80 guests × $120pp = NZ$9,600
Standard open bar — beer, wine, spirits, 5–6 hours. NZ average.
80 guests × $55pp = NZ$4,400
Photography, videography, and social content creation. A content creator is a separate hire from your photographer — they capture behind-the-scenes iPhone footage for same-day reels and social sharing.
Nomad Weddings — Half Day (4 hrs) — NZ$3,500
Nomad Weddings — add-on to any elopement package — NZ$3,000
A content creator is separate from your photographer and videographer. They shoot on iPhone for immediate, social-ready content — candid moments, reactions, and BTS footage your professional team may miss.
Dress and attire, florals, hair and makeup, and wedding bands.
Bride $650 + 0 bridesmaids @ $300 = NZ$650
Helicopter charter, wedding car, and guest transport.
2 landings — Squirrel — Local Mountains — NZ$3,860
Queenstown helicopter wedding rates, valid 1 Sep 2026 – 31 Aug 2027. Prices include GST, DOC landing fees, carbon offsets, and private landing permits where required. Celebrant and photographer arranged separately.
1 van (9 pax) × $500 = NZ$500
The case for eloping
Why more couples are choosing to elope in 2026
The traditional wedding is not disappearing. But a growing number of couples are asking a different question: is a large wedding actually what we want, or is it what we feel we are supposed to want? Here are the reasons they keep landing on elopement.
The cost frees up real money for real life
The average NZ wedding now costs between $50,000 and $90,000. That difference against an elopement is not abstract. In New Zealand’s current property market, $50,000 is a mortgage deposit that can mean a better postcode, a larger home, or an extra bedroom when you need it. It is the renovation you do not have to delay. It is five years of holidays instead of one expensive party. Most couples who elope tell us they felt financially free in a way that took them by surprise.
The guest list is the hardest part of planning a wedding
Before you book a venue, you need a number. Before you have a number, you need to agree on who makes the cut. Every couple we have ever spoken to describes the guest list as the most stressful, most politically fraught part of the entire process. Who is invited. Who is not. Who is offended. Who expects a plus-one. Eloping removes that conversation entirely. You decide together, you tell people after, and you never have to negotiate your own wedding around other people’s expectations.
Planning a traditional wedding takes 18 to 24 months
According to industry data from 2025, NZ couples now plan their weddings 18 to 24 months in advance — up from 12 months pre-pandemic — largely because venues and vendors book out so far ahead. That is nearly two years of logistics, decision fatigue, vendor negotiations, and family diplomacy before the day even arrives. An elopement with us typically takes 3 to 6 months to plan and involves a small fraction of that coordination. Many couples tell us the simplicity of the process was part of the point.
Economic uncertainty has changed how couples think about big spends
The last five years have included a global pandemic, supply chain disruption, a cost-of-living crisis, rising interest rates, and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty. Couples who came of age during this period have a different relationship with large discretionary spending than any previous generation. Committing $60,000 to a single day feels different when that sum represents genuine financial security. Eloping is not a compromise for couples who cannot afford a big wedding. For many, it is the choice of couples who have thought carefully about what they actually value.
The day belongs entirely to you
A traditional wedding is a performance for an audience. The schedule is built around 80 to 150 people’s logistics. The timeline exists to move guests through a venue. Even the ceremony — the actual reason you are there — is often the shortest part of the day. An elopement inverts all of that. The day is built entirely around the two of you. You can linger. You can be spontaneous. You can spend three hours at altitude in the mountains of Queenstown without worrying about getting people to a reception on time. Couples consistently describe it as the most present they have felt in years.
The photos are better
With no schedule pressure and no 150-person crowd, your photographer can take you anywhere and spend real time with you. Our heli-wedding couples are typically on location for two to four hours across multiple alpine settings. The resulting gallery bears no resemblance to what is possible in a 90-minute window at a venue. Some of the most extraordinary wedding photography in the world is being made at elopements — and the locations available in Queenstown are genuinely unmatched.
“After paying for wedding photography in Hawaii as well, we feel like we under-paid for their services.”

From our couples
What it actually feels like on the day
From the USA, Australia, and New Zealand. Different backgrounds, same outcome.
“We are FLOORED with how beautiful our wedding photos turned out. Our loved ones are saying this is the best wedding video they have ever seen. James is SO detail oriented AND chill at the same time. We were in great hands. After paying for wedding photography in Hawaii as well, we feel like we under-paid for their services.”
“James and his team blew us away with how smooth everything went. The photos and videos were amazing. James told us the exact date the weather would be perfect — and it was. My wife and I are not traditional with weddings, and James and his crew made our elopement align with our interests.”
“We were both so nervous going in, not knowing what to expect. James and Tomomi made us feel at ease with their kindness and humour. James gives so much guidance with photos that you don’t need to know what you are doing. Our sneak peek photos have well and truly exceeded our expectations.”

No. Elopements range from just the two of you to small intimate groups of around 20 people. Most couples invite their closest family or a few friends. Our packages are flexible, so whatever size feels right, we work with it.
-
Yes. All packages include a licensed NZ marriage celebrant. We handle the Notice of Intended Marriage filing and official registration after the ceremony. Your marriage is fully legal in New Zealand. For international recognition, most countries accept the NZ marriage certificate directly, but some require an Apostille from the Department of Internal Affairs. We recommend confirming requirements with your home country’s consulate before travelling.
-
We build weather contingency into every heli-wedding package and monitor forecasts closely beforehand. If conditions are unsafe for flying, we work to reschedule the helicopter subject to pilot availability, adjust the ceremony location, or find an alternative that still delivers an exceptional day. This is standard practice for us — Queenstown weather at altitude requires it.
-
Yes. Videography is available as an optional add-on to any package. Our team handles both photography and film, so you will not need to coordinate separate vendors on the day. Ask us about pricing when you enquire.
-
We recommend 3 to 6 months for most packages, and 6 to 12 months for peak summer (December to February). Heli-wedding packages at locations like Coromandel Peak book out well in advance. That said, last-minute availability does come up, so it is always worth reaching out.
-
Most of our clients are international couples from Japan, Australia, the USA, the UK, South Korea, and Southeast Asia. Our team includes native Japanese speakers. We handle all ceremony logistics and can advise on the documentation requirements for your home country.
-
No. The helicopter pricing we quote includes GST, DOC (Department of Conservation) landing fees, carbon offsets, and private landing permits where required. These are covered by the helicopter operator and built into the rate. The only costs outside the package are your flights to Queenstown, accommodation, rings, attire, and the marriage licence — which you arrange directly.
