A Guide for Intimate Elopement Weddings in New Zealand

How to Plan an Elopement

Do you want an intimate, authentic and beautiful wedding?

An Elopement Wedding is a great way for couples to celebrate their commitment to each other, and you can have one just like this too by following the steps mentioned in this blog post.

Elopements are a great way to celebrate your way – bring your own traditions, or ditch all the traditions.

Step 1: Choose The Season

In New Zealand, every season has its unique attraction and beauty.

If you are planning for your Elopement Wedding in New Zealand’s Summer Peak Holiday Season (November~January), there are many spots around the South Island where Wild Lupines will be in full bloom.

Autumn (April~late May) will bring beautiful red and yellow, earthy tones to Arrowtown. We recommend avoiding Winter in the South Island as it can get freezing cold, but if you are looking for photos on a snowy mountain you can always go to Mt Cook in Spring or Summer – there’s glacial ice all year round.

Spring starts from September and goes through to early November, bringing a host of cherry blossoms in Queenstown, Arrowtown, Auckland, Hamilton and Palmerston North.

Step 2: Choose Your Location Or Venue.

Your choice of Location or Venue will play a significant role in the way your Wedding Photos will look, more than your choice of photographer. You will be spoilt for choice in New Zealand, with a huge range of urban or natural locations to get hitched at – the best thing about NZ is just how easy and cheap it can be to obtain permits!

Choose a location that has meaning to you.

Step 3: Choose The Right People & Vendors

Choosing who to invite to your elopement is very important, and the same thing applies to your wedding vendors – they will spending all day with you, so make sure to go with professional wedding vendors you like and can vibe well with. If you are not sure where to look, we can help with that as well with our nationwide connection of professional wedding vendors we love working with!

To legally get married in New Zealand, you will only need a Legal Celebrant and two witnesses.

For Wedding Vendors, look for the following:

  • An experienced Wedding Celebrant who can make a unique & personalised wedding ceremony for you.
  • A Professional Wedding Photographer who will understand your specific needs
  • Dress and/or Tux, or bring your own!
  • Professional Hair and Makeup – Get pampered, look gorgeous, be stress-free on your wedding day and make use of the best styling products on the market.
  • Flowers – Don’t overlook these, because florals can add a whole lot to the look of your wedding!
