A glacial lake with no way in but air.

Lake Erskine is a small, baby-blue glacial lake high in Fiordland National Park, southwest of Queenstown. There is no road. There is no walking track. There is no bus, no ferry, no shuttle. The only way to reach Lake Erskine is by helicopter, which is precisely what makes it one of the most extraordinary places we have ever taken couples to marry.

The lake sits at 1,390 metres in the Earl Mountains, ringed by sheer rock walls and snow-loaded peaks, high above the Milford Track. The water holds that distinctive pale blue you only see in glacier-fed alpine lakes. Snow surrounds the lake every month of the year, and in deep winter the lake itself freezes solid between July and September. The flight in takes around 25 minutes each way from Queenstown, crossing some of the most remote terrain in New Zealand.

If Cecil Peak and the Remarkables are the close-to-town summit options, Lake Erskine is the bespoke flagship. The day everything was set aside for. For a closer look at every alpine option we fly to, see our full guide to Queenstown heli wedding locations.

Legal & Permitted

Lake Erskine sits inside Fiordland National Park, part of the Te Wāhipounamu UNESCO World Heritage Site. All landings are flown under CAA Part 135 certified operators, with the necessary Department of Conservation concessions and pilot operating approvals in place. The full ceremony is legal under New Zealand law.

Group Size

The standard package covers the couple. We can fly up to four guests on additional helicopter seats, subject to availability and weight limits. Because of the flight distance, larger groups may need to fly on a second machine. Best handled as a true elopement.

Lake Erskine, month by month.

Lake Erskine sits inside Fiordland, one of the most weather-sensitive regions in New Zealand. Conditions, lake state, ceremony light and flight reliability all shift through the year. Tap a month to see what to expect.

Heli wedding ceremony at Lake Erskine, a glacial lake in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
What an incredible experience, a dream made reality by the Nomad team. They dealt with having the wedding a day early due to weather conditions without even the smallest hitch. The lead up to the wedding and the day were all stress free for us because they took care of everything so well. James was easy to work with and responsive to our requests. We’re so grateful to the team for helping us make such magical memories.

A heli wedding day at Lake Erskine.

Lake Erskine days follow the same shape as a standard heli wedding, with a longer scenic flight and tighter weather windows. Times below are indicative; the actual schedule is built around your hair and makeup booking, helicopter availability and the weather call.

  1. From 11am

    Hair, makeup & flowers

Morning prep at your accommodation. Photographers arrive to capture preparations and the first look. Flowers are delivered. Optional, but most couples book it through us.

  2. ~1:00pm

    Helicopter check-in

Earlier check-in than a standard heli wedding because of the longer flight. The celebrant meets us at the hangar. Full briefing on the Fiordland flight. There are no facilities at the lake, so use the bathroom here.

  3. ~1:30pm

    Scenic flight into Fiordland

Twenty-five minutes southwest, into Fiordland National Park. The terrain shifts from familiar Queenstown country to remote alpine peaks and glacial valleys. Most couples describe this flight as one of the highlights of the entire day.

  4. ~2:00pm

    Lakeside ceremony & photography

Land beside the lake. Ten to fifteen minute ceremony with the snow-loaded peaks as your backdrop. Around 45 to 60 minutes of photography around the lake edge, on the rocks, and (in winter) on the frozen lake surface.

  5. ~4:00pm

    Return & optional lakeside portraits

Twenty-five minutes back to Queenstown. Optional one hour lakeside portrait session at Lake Wakatipu for a contrasting setting, then drop-off at your accommodation.

Questions about Lake Erskine.

Lake Erskine is a glacial alpine lake at 1,390 metres (4,560 feet) deep inside Fiordland National Park, southwest of Queenstown. There is no road access, no walking track, no public transport. The only way to reach the lake is by helicopter, which is part of what makes it such a singular wedding location.
Yes. Snow surrounds the lake year-round, even in summer. The surrounding peaks hold permanent snow, and patches sit around the lake basin in every month. Between July and September the lake itself freezes solid, producing a completely white alpine scene. Outside winter the lake is fully open and shows its signature baby-blue glacial colour.
About 25 minutes each way from Queenstown Airport. The flight is one of the longest in our heli wedding range, and crosses some of the most remote alpine terrain in New Zealand. Most couples describe the flight in as one of the most memorable parts of the day.
Hiking boots are essential year-round, including in summer. The ground around the lake is uneven, rocky, often snowy. Bring serious warm layers: a thermal under-layer, a winter coat for travel and standing around, and a shawl or wrap for the ceremony itself. Temperatures sit well below those in Queenstown town centre, particularly with the alpine wind. We can carry your shoes for portraits if you want to swap.
Roughly an hour to seventy-five minutes. Ceremony runs ten to fifteen minutes, followed by 45 to 60 minutes of photography around the lake edge and on the surrounding rocks (or, in winter, on the frozen surface). Long enough to feel unhurried; not so long that you get cold.
All helicopter operations are subject to weather and aviation safety conditions, and Fiordland is one of the most weather-sensitive regions in New Zealand. We make a weather call two days before your wedding. If conditions are unsuitable, we can either reschedule to a backup date, or shift to a closer alpine site such as Cecil Peak or The Remarkables if your dates are tight. A multi-day backup window is strongly recommended for Lake Erskine bookings.
