Queenstown, New Zealand
Ground wedding
locations.
Seven locations within an hour of Queenstown. No helicopter required. Each one has a different character, a different season, and a different best use.
No aircraft.
No less beautiful.
A heli-wedding gives you access to terrain that cannot be reached any other way. A ground wedding gives you more time at your location, easier logistics for guests, and a wider range of settings: from alpine lakeshores to heritage village streets to mountain viewpoints you can drive to.
The seven locations on this page are the ones we use most often. Some work best as a single ceremony and portrait location. Others are better used in combination. A few have specific seasonal windows where they are genuinely extraordinary. Arrowtown in mid-April, for example, or Moke Lake in winter snow.
Use this page to compare options before you enquire. If you already know what you want, go straight to the location page. If you are still deciding, the comparison table and FAQ at the bottom of this page are the most useful place to start.
Moke Lake
Best all-round ground location
Moke Lake sits in a broad mountain basin about twenty minutes from central Queenstown. The lake is fed by snowmelt and holds a different colour depending on the season: pale green in summer, deep grey-blue in winter. The surrounding hills are steep and treeless, which means the views are clear in every direction without obstruction.
It is one of the few ground locations that works equally well for a ceremony and a photoshoot. The water gives you a strong foreground, the mountains give you depth, and the overall scale of the setting is closer to what most couples imagine when they picture a Queenstown wedding. Year-round access on a sealed road makes logistics simple.

Coronet Peak
Heli look without flying
Coronet Peak is a ski area that doubles as a wedding location for most of the year. At the summit, the view takes in Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, and the floor of Skippers Canyon. The elevation gives you the aerial feeling of a heli-wedding at a fraction of the cost and complexity.
In summer and autumn, the gondola operates and access is straightforward. In winter, conditions and gondola availability determine what is practical. If you want mountain elevation without a helicopter, this is the most reliable way to get it.

Lake Wakatipu
by Kelvin Heights
Lakeside, close to town
The Kelvin Heights shoreline puts you directly on Lake Wakatipu with the Remarkables and Cecil Peak behind you. It is one of the most accessible ceremony spots available. Fifteen minutes from central Queenstown,, flat ground, and no complicated access requirements.
Late afternoon light works best here. The lake reflects the sky, the mountains catch the last sun, and the scene is simple enough that it does not need much work. A good option for couples who want the iconic Queenstown lake view without a long drive or a helicopter.

Arrowtown
Best autumn location in the region
Arrowtown is a gold-rush era village about twenty minutes from Queenstown. For most of the year it is a pleasant backdrop. For roughly three weeks in mid-April, the deciduous trees along the Arrow River turn copper, amber, and gold. It becomes one of the most photographed locations in New Zealand.
The autumn window is narrow. Peak colour typically falls between mid-April and the first week of May, and it varies by a few days each year depending on temperature. If you are planning a wedding specifically for the autumn colour, build in some flexibility around exact dates. Outside of autumn it still works well, but the draw is significantly reduced.

Lake Johnson
Hidden local spot
Lake Johnson is five minutes from Queenstown Airport and largely unknown to visitors. It sits in a shallow depression in the hills above Frankton, surrounded by native bush and low scrub. The reflection of the sky in the water gives you usable photography conditions almost any time of day.
One limitation worth knowing: the lake sits close to the flight path into Queenstown Airport. Aircraft noise is periodic, not constant, but it is present. For a short ceremony where you want quiet, that is worth factoring in. For portraits, it is a non-issue. It works best when treated as a photography location rather than a primary ceremony spot.

- ~5 min from airport
- Access
- Easy, year-round

- Portraits and add-on
- Quick, quiet portrait sessions close to town
- Couples combining multiple locations on the same day
Lake Hayes
Easy, elegant, flexible
Lake Hayes sits between Queenstown and Arrowtown, about ten minutes from the airport. The lake is calm and reflective, framed by the Remarkables and Cecil Peak on the far shore. It is one of the easier locations to use well: the combination of accessible shoreline and strong mountain backdrop means it requires minimal effort to photograph.
It works as a standalone ceremony and portrait location, or as a second stop on a day that starts somewhere else. Combining it with Arrowtown in autumn or with Moke Lake in winter are both popular choices. If your timeline is tight or your logistics are complicated, Lake Hayes tends to cooperate.

Wilson Bay
Scenic stop, best paired with others
Wilson Bay is a small sheltered cove on Lake Wakatipu near Moke Lake. It is not typically used as a primary ceremony location. The setting is pleasant but not dramatic enough on its own to carry a full wedding day. Its value is as a second or third stop on a multi-location day.
Paired with Moke Lake, which is a short drive away, it gives you variety within the same general area: lake views from a different angle, different light conditions, and a change of scene that keeps a photoshoot feeling fresh. If you are planning a ground wedding day with multiple stops, Wilson Bay is worth including in the conversation.
