A lake born of a collapsed mountain.

Lake Lochnagar, known by its Māori name Ōtaka, sits high in Mt Aspiring National Park, a short helicopter flight north of Queenstown. The lake formed in the early Holocene, when a series of slope failures collapsed a mountainside and dammed the valley below the Tyndall Glacier. The meltwater that filled the new bowl became Lochnagar. Cosmogenic dating of the landslide debris places the event at at least 7,000 years old, and the landslide scar is still clearly visible above the shoreline today.

The lake sits at 1,083 metres, ringed by the peaks of the Aspiring Range with the Tyndall Glacier hanging above. The water holds a clear emerald colour through every season. Unlike Lake Erskine and Lake Hope, Lochnagar rarely freezes over — its volume and active inflow keep the surface open through most winters. The surrounding peaks carry snow year-round; lake-level snow is variable and most reliable in deep winter. The flight in takes around 20 minutes each way from Queenstown, tracing Skippers Canyon and the Shotover headwaters into Mt Aspiring National Park.

For couples who want the drama of a remote alpine lake without giving up open water reflections, Lochnagar is one of the most photogenic landings we offer. For a closer look at every alpine option we fly to, see our full guide to Queenstown heli wedding locations.

What you need to know.

Altitude

1,083m

Alpine lake at 3,553 feet, set inside Mt Aspiring National Park beneath the hanging ice of the Tyndall Glacier.

Snow Cover

On the peaks

The surrounding peaks of the Aspiring Range carry snow year-round. Lake-level snow is variable; reliable in winter, patchy in summer. The lake itself rarely freezes over, keeping its emerald colour through most winters.

Flight Time

~20 min

Twenty minutes each way from Queenstown, crossing the Shotover River headwaters and skirting the Tyndall Glacier on approach.

Footwear

Hiking boots

Recommended. The shoreline is rocky and uneven and snow is common. We carry your shoes for portraits if you want to swap into them once we land.

Legal & Permitted

Lake Lochnagar sits inside Mt Aspiring National Park, part of the Te Wāhipounamu UNESCO World Heritage Site. All landings are flown under CAA Part 135 certified operators, with the necessary Department of Conservation concessions and pilot operating approvals in place. The full ceremony is legal under New Zealand law.

Group Size

The standard package covers the couple. We can fly up to four guests on additional helicopter seats, subject to availability and weight limits. Lochnagar’s shorter flight time makes it more flexible for adding guests than the Fiordland sites.

Questions about Lake Lochnagar.

Lake Lochnagar, also known by its Māori name Ōtaka or as Goat Lake, is an emerald alpine lake at 1,083 metres (3,553 feet) inside Mt Aspiring National Park, south-west of Wanaka. There is no road access and no walking track suitable for a wedding day. The only way to reach it is by helicopter, approximately 20 minutes from Queenstown.
Lake Lochnagar was formed in the early Holocene, when a series of slope failures collapsed a mountainside and dammed the valley below the Tyndall Glacier. Cosmogenic dating of the landslide debris (Sweeney et al., 2013) places the event at at least 7,000 years old, with the dam likely constructed over multiple failure events. The landslide scar is still clearly visible above the shoreline today.
Rarely. Unlike Lake Erskine and Lake Hope, Lake Lochnagar’s volume and active inflow keep the surface open through most winters. Thin shore ice can form in severe cold snaps, but the lake rarely freezes over completely. The surrounding peaks carry snow year-round; lake-level snow is variable — reliable in deep winter, patchy in summer. The combination of open emerald water against snow-covered slopes is what makes winter Lochnagar weddings so striking.
About 20 minutes each way from Queenstown Airport. The flight traces Skippers Canyon and the Shotover River headwaters into Mt Aspiring National Park, with the Aspiring Range and the Tyndall Glacier coming into view on approach. Most couples describe it as one of the most cinematic parts of the day.
Hiking boots or sturdy outdoor footwear are recommended. The shoreline is rocky and uneven and snow is common in winter. Bring warm layers regardless of season: a thermal under-layer, a coat for travel, and a shawl or wrap for the ceremony. Temperatures at 1,083 metres sit well below those in Queenstown town centre, particularly with any alpine wind. We can carry your shoes for portraits if you want to swap.
All helicopter operations are subject to weather and aviation safety conditions. Mt Aspiring National Park weather is typically more stable than Fiordland, but high-altitude flights still require clear conditions. We make a weather call on the morning of your wedding. If conditions at Lochnagar are unsuitable, we can either reschedule to a backup date, or shift to a closer alpine site such as Cecil Peak or The Remarkables.
